OUR MERCANTILE COMMUNITY. -
JOHN BAKER, ESQ. PROVISION MERCHANT
Australia, the gold land, has just offered, and we are sorry for it, [? -
indecipherable] attractions to one of our most estimable merchants, as to invite
his removal to that distant land, now growing in greatness and wealth. To
the deep sorrow of a large number of excellent working men, whom he paid
liberally and treated with the utmost kindness besides, and to the great regret
of the community by whom this high character, well deserved, was appreciated,
John Baker, Esq., head of the large Provision Establishment in Upper William
Street, left Limerick this morning by train, accompanied by the members of his
amiable family enroute to Australia where he proposes to resume the commercial
enterprise with which he is conversant, and to create there those extensive
operations of which, in mental and money power, he is and will be, we believe, a
perfect master. No merchant employer could be more warmly loved than Mr
Baker, and none was ever better obeyed and served. And this fidelity has,
on the other hand, elicited and enlisted his own liberality and confidence; for
he takes with him to the new sphere of his enterprise several of the hands whom
he had engaged in Limerick, as well as his upright and estimable manager, Mr
Brennan, by whom his warm regard and entire trust have been fully
deserved. A crowd of people were at the Terminus this morning when Mr and
Mrs Baker and their family were setting forth for the new sphere in which we
earnestly hope and fully believe they will have prosperity and happiness; and by
all who were present when the train was about to move, the deepest concern was
manifested for the loss of such benefactors in public and private capacity, and
the most heartfelt prayers breathed by the many they served, for their safe
passage to the far off land wither they are bearing the best wishes and respect
of the public in general.
